The common loon is a graceful and elegant bird.  One of the many activities it performs regularly is preening itself.  Unlike humans, it does not do it for vanity but for survival.  Daily preening is necessary to keep feathers in top condition for flight, diving and warmth.  One preening behavior is to lift its’ wings out of the water and flap vigorously  - Available in Standard Print Sizes - One of my favorite wildlife subjects I have spent countless hours over the past several years taking thousands of images that capture their behavior and life cycle.  Several of my favorite images can be seen by clicking on the following link…   - more Loon images -
