I have traveled to and photographed forests throughout North America, but none offer the character or mystique of the giant sequoias of California. Isolated spots along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains provide the proper mix of moisture, soil, and climate for these resilient trees to grow for thousands of years, becoming some of the largest trees anywhere in the world. The day this image was captured, I watched as the fog descended creating a wonderful mix of light and shadow on these towering giants.
